In analysis of 2023, I have questioned the many realities of Art & Politics and vice versa, related to life’s consequences which intersected in 1978-93, correlated and peaking with the misfortune of Danica’s illness. I came to be a dedicated health and care provider for our young family, treading the many adversities. Why? My mom used to tell me: Rasto, when it is easy, probably it is not worth to do it, but do it any way! It was hard, very, very hard, so I turned the ‘I’ into ‘we’, and we have done it all as a family, all contributing, and all, all together! (Not a slogan... action!) Got it? Is that hubris? (Read: “Artist’s ideas beyond reach”, by Marcia Almey, Ottawa Citizen, Dec. 3-4, 1981, p.7) Beyond reach?! Really!? Quite contrary, from the many entries from the book of “Guests” unsolicited from the same exposition Nov. 22/81 by Bernard P. Walke - “True Canadian Sculpture - Canada’s Heritage is enriched by the Multiple Sculpture”. Just think, past-present-future, the loss! (Read: Aylmer Bulletin 2006, Anniversary edition p.28). Wow! And many people have spoken, with pride! - Democracy, true! And not some anachronical hang-over in individualistic hatchet job of totality. I apologize for this banality in my view of the many expositions which I have attended, by intent all jurried, all by honorable, distinguished jurors in Canada’s, USA’s, Japan’s, France’s, Switzerland’s scholars, historians, writers, artists…what an arrogance have soured this new face and phase of totalitarian crap…? Honor to Danica Betakova, the maiden with the shield of her Hlavina family! |

The year 2023 is proving that Danica's essay (theory) message from 1988 was correct (honor to Danica) as it factualized (viz. Lord Ennals UN-89). By that, Rasto's work-research in M/S, at all in conclusive stage in 1989 (Thanks to Danica Betakova), and by being declined by The Institute for Contemporary Art, USA (P.S.1.NY), with the Canada Art Council in tandem (so sad!), hit a snag of 34 years. I sincerely hope that the ‘Multiples’ in simulate in 1989 by the Rule of Law ‘democratically’ chosen (see: Canadian Art, winter 1991) hit the mother lode of knowledge (as I did); so much needed! If not, the Law of Nature will prevail. Bad choices of Yesterday come back in ‘multiples’, multiple ways and multiple times, in multiple reflection. The Good Book says: Much of sin is based on ignorance and stupidity. Sadly, I concur!

Was it a coincidence or a Providence, or just a paradox which brought Auguste Rodin with his sculpture “Citizens of Calais” to his bankruptcy, while Rasto with his “Duoset” (“The Citizen”, p.40, Dec.3, 1977), by all means a good sculpture, was exponentially subjugated, peaking in next: in 1985 Rasto was chosen for The 1st Rodin Grand Prize Exhibition. Ethnic newspaper “Kanadsky Slovak”, Novy Rok 86, Strana 8, printed the whole letter from the Hakone Open-Air Museum, one of the most prestigious of world class institutions. Please note Encl. cc: Embassy of Canada, Tokyo! That says Canadian Government was dully informed! It was not up to me to question the integrity of the Democratic institution of Canada, or Canadian Press, TV in failure of their mandate. Danica stepped up with Mr. Akihiko Honda and Shimizu Art Foundry in exemplary cooperation. The “Ethnics” (Kanadsky Sloval, Novy Domov) and the “Locals” (Aylmer Bulletin, L’Echo) with the front page cover, Vol.3, #2, le 24 Mai 1986) stood by me, steadfast. In 1988 I went as far as personally arranging for representation with The External Affairs - (Robyn Mieter at 996-####). Though, the Cultural Atache took a vacation on a “deserted island with no phone,” as I was told upon my arrival in Tokyo. Therefore the 1989, due to its resemblance to “parable of the weeds explained” (Matthew 13:36-39), may also be considered just a coincidence of many questions, or Providence with many more questions! Danica and I have fulfilled our obligation, as per our 1974 oath to Canada and the Queen Elizabeth II., with honour, what I would expect in reciprocity, a speck of decency, at least!
